Modern Furniture Shopping in Seattle

As I mentioned previously, after purchasing a dining table from Kasala and not being entirely happy with the sideboard we also purchased, I decided that we needed to find a new sideboard.  I fell in love with the Pearse sideboard at Crate and Barrel.  The price was right and I loved the design.  After ordering online, I got a call about 2 weeks later saying that my order couldn’t be fulfilled.  I was devastated!  I called the two stores in my area to see if I could buy the floor sample but alas, it had sold just the day before.  I even talked with the Crate and Barrel furniture rep if I could keep my name on a waitlist to see if I could get any orders that were cancelled by other customers.  Unfortunately the rep said that I was 2nd to last on a lengthy list of unfulfilled orders.  After nursing my broken heart for a few weeks, I’m back on the quest to find a sideboard for our living room.

We ended up going to visit a few of stores over the weekend and I wanted to write down my thoughts on the stores, selection and service.  It turns out several of the stores are near each other on Western avenue near Madison so it was actually very easy to visit a few of them together.  Street parking was also easy to find on a Saturday afternoon.

Camerich by Alchemy

909 Western Avenue, Seattle, WA 98104 206.682.7575

I found 2 sideboards that I liked online that I wanted to see in person.  I really liked the Max and Solo sideboards.  They seemed sturdy but the cabinet doors were uneven.  The salesperson said that could be adjusted.  I just did a bit of research and Camerich is a Chinese company.  I am not 100% sure but I think all of the furniture is designed and made in China.  That being said, it was still quite high quality and better than anything other furniture I’ve seen from China.

While the sideboards are really nice, they seem a tad overpriced since each piece is sold individually and the Solo cabinet’s drawers are an add-in.

I think everything in the store is Camerich furniture.  I saw that they had a floor sample for sale from another brand but that was it.  Since it is all Camerich, the nice thing is that the entire catalog is available online on their website.

Modern Design Sofas

915 Western Ave, Seattle, WA 98104 206.652.8374

This store mostly sells modern sofas (hence the name!) but they do sell Huppe furniture, though they only had 1 sideboard in the store to view. They had the Moment tall sideboard in the store.  It wasn’t my favorite but it did seem well made like the other Huppe sideboard we saw previously.  I didn’t pay too much attention to the sofas as we were in a hurry but I did like the design and the pricing seemed on par with Kasala.  I believe all of the furniture is made to order by the manufacturers and the store doesn’t sell its own private label designs.  The salesperson seemed knowledgeable about the furniture and was very friendly.

BoConcept

901 Western Avenue, Seattle, WA 98104 206.464.9999

While we had already visited BoConcept in Bellevue on our last shopping trip, we wanted to take a look at the Occa sideboard again since it had been awhile. I found that the salesman here was a little bit pushy, though perhaps he was just trying to be extra helpful.  He didn’t really give me a chance to take a look around before diving in to look at finishes and pricing.  I got a little flustered and didn’t even get a chance to check out the construction of the drawers.  Oops!  I did still like the Occa but I don’t think its my top pick.  Everything in the store is BoConcept design so it should be on the website.

Roche-Bobois

1015 Western Ave, Seattle, WA 98104 206.332.9744

I saw that there was one more furniture store just a few steps away so I thought we’d go take a look.  The store smells like new leather as you walk in and the furniture was super fancy and expensive.  So much so, that my husband remarked that people who can afford to shop here would probably be using a designer to shop for them!  The sideboards were nice, but in my opinion not worth the $8500 price tag.  Like Camerich and BoConcept, everything in the store is Roche-Bobois design.  The salesman said that much of their furniture is made in Italy.  The store had the Colors sideboard and Mangrove sideboard on display.

Seva Home

900 Lenora Street, Seattle, WA 98121 206.323.9925

Seva was the one store we visited that wasn’t on Western Avenue with the other stores. However, the nice thing is they have 2 hr validated parking in the South Lake Union Whole Foods garage!

It turns out they also carry the Huppe line and had the Huppe Cubic dresser in store.  I love it and I am thinking I will love the Huppe Illusion sideboard that is on their website.  Both of these are made in Canada and seemed to be good quality though I forget if I looked at the cabinet joinery technique.

They didn’t have too many options of sideboards to look at but they did say they represent over 350 manufacturers.  While I was there, another couple was pouring through design books, presumably picking out options.  The salesperson I spoke to said she would email me options that she would pick out since my little one was starting to have a meltdown after a few hours of shopping!

Others

There were a few other stores I found online that we didn’t get a chance to visit today:

Alchemy Collection stocks Calligaris Furniture which looks beautiful online.  They also stock Jesse Furniture who makes the gorgeous “Frame” sideboard that I saw at Kasala (for some reason it didn’t really appeal to me in the Mustard laquer that Kasala had in store, but this photo with the walnut veneer looks amazing!).  I’ll have to find time to go back to Seattle to visit that store sometime soon.

Ligne Roset seems like a French BoConcept to me.  Their website seems to show many options for the different designs and the prices for each.

Avetex is a San Francisco company but had a page on Seattle deliveries which I found via Google.  While I am usually not opposed to ordering things online, furniture seems like it would be a little risky.  What if there was an issue when the item arrived?  I will have to do a bit more research into what Avetex does in that case.

Inform and Diva Furniture represent plenty of high end designers.  A good place to start looking at designers if you like modern furniture.

As you can see, I really like geometric lines!   I didn’t expect it, but I seem to have a bit of a “type”.  Did you like any of the sideboards I’m considering?  Let me know what you think!

Christmas traditions

Ok so I know it’s not even Thanksgiving yet but I am seeing Christmas decorations go up at the mall and I’m loving it since this is my favorite time of the year.

One of the traditions I hope to start with my daughter is counting down the days to Christmas with an advent calendar.  I saw this gorgeous wood calendar at a unique gift shop at the mall.  It is extremely well made and beautiful but I would like a more affordable option as it was a little pricey.

I found a more affordable option that was really similar at Target. I thought it was really cute and while it wasn’t perfect the way the Byer’s Choice one was, it would do.

While I was searching for advent calendars I found that they come in all shapes, sizes and styles.  Here are a few more that I thought were cute!

This one caught my eye in the PBKids catalog.  It is gorgeous and already sold out!

There are also options on Etsy, though the best ones are already sold out for this year.  I’m totally in love with this one and I’m seriously considering buying the PDF to make my own!

Seattle & National Furniture Store Reviews

After buying a dining set last weekend I kind of had second thoughts and wanted to explore my options a little more so on the weekend we visited a whole mess of furniture stores.  I wanted to provide a quick review for posterity.

Kasala – Southcenter

Kasala is stocked with amazing modern pieces.  A lot of stuff is made exclusively for them by manufacturer in China, but they also carry some “name brand” pieces as well.  Generally the affordable stuff is their house brand and the stuff that is a few thousand more is the name brand.  For instance, they carry the Miniforms Otto dining table which is a work of art.

The Southcenter store is almost exactly like the Bellevue store in terms of size and items that they carry.  We looked at the table again and decided that we still loved it and after viewing the sideboard again, I was still very “meh” about it.  One nice thing is that the Southcenter location carried slightly different options than the Bellevue store so if you’re trying to decide between different finishes and can’t figure it out based on the little sample chips, you might want to ask if they are displaying the finish at the other store.

Kasala – Outlet

The last time we went to the Kasala Outlet was years and years ago and it has totally changed since then.  It actually is a showroom now rather than a bunch of furniture piled up.  There are a few things that are “outlet stocked” but most of it is damages and returns.  We saw a really cool “origami” coffeetable that opened up to reveal storage but alas we don’t need one of those right now.  The prices are pretty great considering I couldn’t even tell where the damage was unless I looked at the tag indicating the problem.  For instance, the table that we purchased was here for 20% less than the sale price.

Moe’s Home Collection

Moe’s is a modern furniture store down in the Southcenter area.  They seemed to have a range of prices and quality.  They had a set of table and 4 chairs for $500, but they also had another table that was absolutely gorgeous and was $3000.  They stock some name brands like Natuzzi.

They sent me an email telling me they were doing a Dining Event this past weekend.  There were a few things on sale, but it was not the entire stock of dining furniture.

Macy’s Furniture Gallery

The nice thing about the Macy’s Furniture Gallery is that they stocked almost everything they show online.  Their style is more traditional than modern or transitional so there wasn’t a whole lot that was to my taste.  The prices can be quite good.  For instance, this dining set was only $799 for the table and 4 chairs.  However, the quality wasn’t very good. The drawers of the sideboard didn’t glide well and the cabinets were not hung evenly.  One thing to note is that the website lists “packages” of tables and chairs and sideboard for many sets but in the store, you can buy each item separately.

Crate and Barrel

My local Crate and Barrel has a ton of furniture options displayed so after checking out the website, I had a good idea of what I wanted to check out in person. As a bonus, the website will tell you if items are currently on display in store or not.

Crate and Barrel - Pearse Large Sideboard ($999)
Crate and Barrel – Pearse Large Sideboard ($999)

I absolutely fell in love with the Pearse sideboard when I saw it in store.  In fact, I’m about 99.9% sure that this is the one we want.  It is extremely well made.  The drawers glide out smoothly and the doors hang correctly.  Because it is being discontinued, the price has been reduced drastically.  It originally retailed for $1700.  Crate and Barrel also has a range of options.  There were some sideboards in the $500-700 range as well.

Schoenfeld Interiors

I’ve driven by this store a million times but this was the first time we stopped in.  This was an incredibly high end store with beautifully made furniture.  However, the prices are also astronomical.  Most of it was out of our budget but we did see a few things that were in the realm of possibility, but still more than what we wanted to spend.  That being said, everything in this store was well made, high quality furniture that will last.  Style-wise I would say it had mostly contemporary furniture.

The finishes were impeccable on each piece, drawers move smoothly and most have the soft-close feature, cabinets are hung evenly and everything is just as well made as you would expect at a high price point.  Much of their furniture is also made in America or made in Canada.

We really liked this Huppe Magnolia sideboard.  They showed a smokey walnut finish in person and it looks very different.  The one in this image shows a ton of grain and zebra stripes, but the one in the store was much more subtle. This piece was made in Canada.

BoConcept

This store had amazing modern furniture.  BoConcept is a Danish company where everything is modular. The furniture is well made and fairly expensive.  There are also tons of customization options available.  The floor samples were a great deal if you manage to find something you like and as a bonus, they are listed on their website.

We liked this sideboard from their Occa collection.  We thought it was of high quality.  It was one of the most affordable items in the showroom.  Prices went all the way up to $10k for some large pieces!

Dania Furniture

Dania is a midrange contemporary store.  There are some nice pieces there but I actually think you’re better off shopping Kasala on sale.  I think they show most of their catalog online.  I wasn’t crazy about any of the sideboards here.  They are currently doing a Golden Ticket event where you can get $50 off one purchase by signing up online.

West Elm

Though we didn’t visit West Elm this weekend, I thought I’d include it here for completeness sake.  West Elm has less furniture in store to display than my local Crate and Barrel does.  They were able to tell me on the phone if they were showing particular pieces that I was interested in, and for chairs, they said they could bring one out from the back room if it wasn’t currently on display.

The store had a little design center in the back where you could choose fabrics and finishes. The store felt a little bit cramped with all of the houseware items that they also sell like decor and kitchen items since they don’t have a dedicated furniture area.  It’s just mixed in throughout the store.  I would say the quality of the items is mid-range.

The table and chairs we ordered required assembly and as my husband was putting together the chairs we purchased, I noticed that there were some nice construction details like a basket weave support under the cushion.  That’s not something you’re going to find in an Ikea chair.  Also all of the furniture pieces arrived in perfect condition.  I didn’t see any dings or dents in the wood which is good.  When we bought our Graco crib, one of the pieces was horribly misshapen and needed to be replaced, and I had a huge issue doing that so I am a bit sensitive to this. 🙂

Overall, I’ve been very happy with our West Elm furniture and I’d purchase again.

What are your favorite furniture stores?  Do you like to shop local or national chains?  High end or budget?  We’re still figuring things out ourselves. 🙂

Friends & Family Sales Everywhere… And we have some new furniture!

It seems like everywhere I look, there is a friends and family sale happening! Bloomingdales is having yet another one (even though they just had one in October!). I’m not complaining… its 20% off nearly everything with code BFAM.

Gap is having another F&F sale of 35% off everything (40% off if you’re a card holder) and it has been extended until Tuesday, November 12.  Use the code GAPFRIENDS and ask for it in store.  The signage instore says 30% off but the code should get you to 35%.  Also, don’t forget that for every $50 you spend, you’ll get $25 in GapCash redeemable in December.

I went into the store today and I picked up two adorable coats for my daughter.  We only need one but I couldn’t decide so I brought them home to see what my husband thought.  The blue one’s sleeves are oddly extremely long.  My daughter is tall so I suspect its just proportioned strangely.  The red one’s sleeves are perfect, though I like the overall length of the blue one more since daycare will be taking her outside to play twice a day, rain or shine.  The red coat’s hood also stays on her head, while the blue one slips off for some reason.  I am thinking we may keep the red one but that blue one is just so darn cute with those ruffles!

New Furniture!

I posted about looking for a new dining table for our eat in kitchen and we got that in last week.  I’m just waiting for the scotch guard to arrive so that we can spray our dining chairs and start using them!

Over the weekend, we also went to a local furniture store’s sale.  Kasala Furniture has some amazing pieces and we unexpectedly fell in love with a new dining table for our formal dining space while we were there browsing.  We slept on it and decided to go back the next day to purchase it.  Our formal dining area has been sitting empty since we moved into our home 5 years ago so this was rather exciting news for us.  We also purchased a sideboard but I’m kind of having second thoughts.  I am thinking about going back to the store and staring at it a little more.  It’s such a big purchase that I really want to be 100% sure that I love it since its not an easy return like bringing back something to the mall!

Eat In Kitchen Makeover Ideas

When we first moved into our house, we had absolutely no money leftover for decorating. We are finally looking at replacing our cheap Ikea dining set that is in our eat-in kitchen.  The previous owners had a round table in that space so I have always pictured getting a round table for it as well.

My requirements are a 40-44″ tabletop, modern or mid-century modern looking and a wooden table top.  I’m not a fan of glass tops and unfortunately for me, most modern round tables are glass topped!

Here are a few options I have scoped out.  Let me know what you think!

CB2 Peak Dining Table ($399)

I love the way the legs look on this CB2 table.  We saw it in person when we were visiting the SF store and it was the perfect size for our space at 40″ wide.  It also looked well made and sturdy.  The only downside to the legs is that my husband has long legs and likes to stretch out underneath the table (and since I have short legs I don’t mind!).  He won’t be able to do that with this one.  Also, since there is no CB2 store locally, if there is any problem with the table I’m not sure what kind of support we’d get with exchanging it.

West Elm Parker Mid-Century Round Dining Table ($499)

I really like the unique legs on this table.  It is also on sale now through 10/21/2013 for $424 and its always nice to save a little bit!  There’s a West Elm store in Seattle so I was going to call and see if they had it in store to view.

West Elm Arc Base Pedestal Table ($399)

My husband liked this one the best out of all the ones I showed him.  It’s quite unique looking which is why I think he likes it.  Its also on sale for $339 until 10/21/2013.  I wonder if the table legs would get in the way of my husband’s long legs though?  Again, I’m going to call West Elm and see if they have it in the store.

What do you think?  Any tables stand out to you?  And what chairs would coordinate?
